Although this article is about a number of significant orthographic principles there are two topics that are particularly pertinent for me: Unravelling the 'story' of one word reveals the intertwined 'stories' of many other words. Investigating <one> clearly demonstrates that meaning and structure are the main concern of English orthography  not pronunciation! Recently, during math week, we investigated the number words, a wonderfully rich source of orthographic understandings. In education, <one> is generally considered a 'sight word' or a 'high frequency word', often a word memorised in isolation. It only seems logical to me, if words are considered  high frequency,  then we should be investigating and analysing them to fully understand the 'how' and 'why' of the spelling. Can you teach orthography to young children?

YES!...recently I had the wonderful opportunity to guide a group of inspiring, enthusiastic 4 and 5 year old learners. Together, we embarked on an incredible journey of 'digging' into the depths of the English language.  Here is an account of our learning journey and our amazing discoveries! Our inquiry: Words belong in families, connected by meaning and spelling.  Teaching strategies:   1. 'Concept attainment'- learners make their own learning discoveries. Usually presented as a Venn Diagram. Prior: identify what needs to be discovered. During: learners think independently/to self about concept. After: learners reveal the reason why these words are connected.  2. Think/pair/share- all learners are actively involved.   Used frequently throughout the lesson in different formats and ways. Using Big Books to investigate the structure of the English Language.

Big books are a rich resource that can be used to  explicitly teach structured word inquiry. It is a very effective way to demonstrate the connection between the reading and writing systems.  Big books can be used to teach many different essential concepts about how the English language works. In this post, I specifically want to focus on how to  embed structured word inquiry through reading, using big books (fiction/non fiction) as the starting point. Selecting the most appropriate text for your students is an important planning step. I have chosen Mrs Wishy Washy, as this text is particularly rich in language with vocabulary that is interesting, predictable and repetitive for young children. Dialogue is an important concept that is consistently modelled throughout this particular text. The word <said> is evident on most pages.
